What is the outlier score
Updated October 28, 2026
The outlier score answers one question: how far did this post beat what the account usually gets? It helps find posts that really worked, whatever the size of the profile.
The formula
outlier = the post’s views ÷ the profile’s median views
An outlier of 1× is an ordinary post for that account. At 3× or more, the post beat the usual three times over: that is the threshold OrdenaFeed uses to flag the standouts.
Why the median and not the average
A single viral post lifts the average a lot and makes all the rest look bad. The median, the middle value, barely moves because of one extreme case, so it better describes what the account normally gets.
A real example
On an Instagram profile with 20 Reels analyzed, the median had about 3,600 views. The best Reel reached 165,000, that is 46.4 times the median. Only 4 of the 20 beat 3×. Without this calculation, looking at loose numbers alone, it would have been hard to tell exceptions from the normal level.
How to use it
- Sort a profile by outlier and look at the posts above 3×.
- Look for what they share: topic, opening words, length, format, type of hook.
- Compare with engagement,
(likes + comments) ÷ views, to see whether the post only reached many people or also drew a reaction.
When to be cautious
- With few posts the median is unreliable. The more you analyze, the better.
- Views also depend on how the platform distributed that content; the outlier doesn’t explain why it worked, it only points to where to look.
- It is a ranking indicator, not a prediction.
